R.I.P. Jimmy Saville

Jimmy Saville may not be a name that means much to people under the age of thirty right now, but to those of us who remember the eighties clearly, and indeed those that remember the seventies (hello you lot), he was a big part of British culture. His legendary series 'Jim'll Fix It' was much loved by millions, who would watch each week as he made the dreams of viewers young and old come true.

I remember so many evenings spent watching him making folks' dreams come true on TV, and following that I always thought of him as a pleasant presence in our odd cultural landscape. A personality, a real celebrity, and a real character.

He was (and remains) a pleasant symbol of British eccentricity and an era of show business which is much missed by many of us and completely unappreciated by others. So goodbye, Sir Jimmy Saville, and thanks for fixing it so we remember you as you were. Rest in peace.
