Review: Torpedohead - 'TRPHD' EP

 Torpedohead

'TRPHD'

Genre: Hard Rock/Melodic Punk

A new release by Torpedohead is always something I'm excited to hear about, so when I had the opportunity to dive into this new 6 track EP I knew I was in for a treat. If you're not familiar with Torpedohead, this glorious German trio play what is essentially the purest rock music possible.

There are elements of classic hard rock, punk, glam, blues rock and more, bringing together the sound of bands like Kiss, Bang Tango and Kix with the raucous drive of Hellacopters, The Clash and early Almighty. What you have here is rock n' roll played with passion, skill and a deep understanding of melody.

The voice of vocalist/guitarist Sven Spacebrain lies somewhere between Ginger Wildheart and Nick from the Backyard Babies, while his riffs are neat and uncluttered. The rhythm section of Holger and Zasch keep things moving along with massive enthusiasm and few frills. With tunes like these though you really don't need another selling point.

Opening with the Cheap Trick-esque 'One Step Ahead', the band hook you straight away with a song that will have you singing along by the second chorus. There's no crap with this band. No fat. No filler. Just the good stuff.

'Heartbleed' has a classic Kiss feel with Sven's vocals giving it that punk edge. 'Don't Care About You' has that 1st-album Almighty swagger and another of their classy and classic choruses.

'Ain't Your Life' brings to mind a heavier Enuff Z'Nuff, and the main hook of the song is crying out to be on a movie soundtrack. 'Candyhatefuel' has a late 70s/early 80s feel in the best way, while 'Shot on Mars' brings all of the aforementioned influences together for one last blast of big vocals and bigger guitars.

Torpedohead have the effortless cool of much bigger bands – and the songs and talent to match. This EP is the perfect jumping-on point for new listeners and a wonderful treat for those of us already in love with this phenomenal band. It's not just the band have been consistent with the quality of their releases – they surpass themselves with each successive thing they put out.

This EP has absolutely put a big dumb grin on my face.
